Emergency Guide: Handling a Burst Pipe Before Help Arrives
A fractured 3/4-inch pressurized water line can release over 10–12 gallons per minute, destroying floors, ceilings, and electrical panels within minutes.
Crucial First Response Checklist:
- Shut Down Main Water: Turn the primary master gate valve or ball valve clockwise until fully stopped. This valve is usually near the water meter in the basement.
- Relieve Line Pressure: Open cold and hot faucets on the lowest level of the property to drain remaining trapped water out of vertical pipe risers safely.
- Protect Electrical Panels: If water is cascading near outlets, fuse boxes, or light fixtures, cut power via the main breaker from a dry area.
NYC Building Infrastructure Challenges
Pre-war NYC structures frequently utilize aging threaded galvanized iron and soldered copper risers prone to winter freeze expansion and galvanic corrosion. Our emergency dispatch units carry specialized pipe cutters, ProPress fittings, and high-temp soldering rigs to repair concealed leaks with minimal structural demolition.
