Water Heater Emergencies: Leaks vs. Component Failures
A water heater leak from the top fittings is often repairable on-site. However, water pooling around the bottom of the jacket typically signals an internal tank rupture requiring immediate replacement.
Emergency Shutdown Steps:
- Turn Off the Cold Water Supply: Turn the shutoff valve located directly above the water heater on the cold water inlet pipe clockwise.
- Cut Gas or Electric Power: For gas heaters, switch the thermostat dial on the gas valve to "OFF". For electric heaters, shut off the dual-pole breaker in your electrical service panel.
- Do Not Touch the Temperature & Pressure (T&P) Valve: Opening an aged safety relief valve under high pressure can cause scalding burns or stick open.
