Emergency Gas Leak Protocol (Safety First)
Natural gas is treated with mercaptan to create a distinct sulfur/rotten-egg odor. Gas leaks pose an immediate explosion hazard.
Critical Safety Actions:
- Evacuate Immediately: Leave the premises without turning light switches on or off, and do not use landline phones or appliances.
- Call Emergency Services: From a safe distance outside, contact 911 and your utility provider (Con Edison at 1-800-75-CONED or National Grid at 1-718-643-4050).
- Contact a Licensed Master Plumber (LMP): Only a Licensed Master Plumber is legally authorized to repair gas piping and file required DOB test paperwork in NYC.
Restoring Gas Service After a Utility Lock-Off (Red Tag)
When the utility locks your gas meter, restoring service requires a high-pressure integrity test, filing an Emergency Work Notice with the NYC DOB, repairing defective black iron pipe threads, and coordinating the final utility unlock inspection.
